It’s not the insults that bother me…

I can take an insult like a pro. I’ve been rebounding fat jokes since I was a little nipper. But lately something about these comments has been bothering me. For a while I thought I had gone soft. I thought my thick skin had been worn away by the anonymous hate. But I realized that wasn’t the case. The reason why the hate started depressing me is because not everyone has a thick skin. And they shouldn’t have to have a thick skin. And I know if these people are sending me hate, they are probably sending it to others. It’s one thing to tear someone down if their actions provoke it. I have no problem with people telling Rush Limbaugh he’s a giant asshole. But I just posted a picture of me and my dog. Many of my friends will post pictures of themselves and douchebags will call them names. Or they’ll get shit because they’re gay or transgender or female or they just breathe air. I saw an amazing video by Lindsay Stirling and made the mistake of reading the comments on youtube. I saw this gem, “FUCKING SLUT LOOK AT HER SPREAD HER LEGS”

And there is no solution to it. No way to stop it. The internet gives us the wonderful option of anonymity, but too many people take this gift and use it to be assholes. People always send in the advice to “ignore the haters.” But it’s just not that simple. Hate has such a loud voice. Even in a sea of compliments it sticks out like a sore thumb.

If someone sends hate my way, don’t worry too much about it. Typically I’m able to destroy them with a solid rebuttal and that is always very satisfying. But if you see it somewhere else, try to balance it out. Give the recipient of that hate something to smile about. Say something to make their day. Or just send them this GIF.
